John 20:11–18 has her there alone, weeping, mistaking the risen Christ for the gardener, and then sent by him to tell the others. Mark 16:9 names her as the first to whom he appeared. Luke 8:2 records that seven demons had gone out of her and that she was among the women who supported the ministry from their own resources.

The title apostola apostolorum, apostle to the apostles, is not a modern coinage. It appears in the Latin tradition from at least the twelfth century, in Hippolytus earlier in substance, and it turns on a plain fact: she was commissioned to carry the resurrection to the men who would be called apostles. In 2016 Rome raised her commemoration to a feast on the general calendar, giving the reason that she was the first witness and herald of the resurrection.

Nothing in the gospels calls her a prostitute. That single homiletic move fused three women into one and gave the Western Church its penitent prostitute. The Eastern churches never accepted the conflation and have always kept the three distinct.

Historical record. The correction came in 1969, when the revision of the Roman calendar separated the three figures and restored her proper commemoration as the disciple of Luke 8 and the witness of John 20. That is 1,378 years during which the first witness of the resurrection was preached, painted, and sung about as a repentant whore, in a Church that had her commission in its own scriptures the entire time.

Bloom’s reading. We take the length of that error as the point rather than the footnote. An institution can hold the correct text, read it aloud every year, and still be wrong about a person for fourteen centuries because a respected man once said something convenient. That failure mode is not extinct, and it is the specific failure this church was erected against.

Bloom’s reading. A church for people the world has discarded takes the name of the woman the Church itself discarded and then rehabilitated too late for her to hear it. Her patronage is not decoration. It is the standing reminder that being diminished by the institution is not evidence against you, and that the record can be corrected — slowly, and usually by people who were not believed at the time.

OTHER WITNESSES KEPT HERE

Commemorations on this church’s calendar.

Historical record

22 July

St. Mary Magdalene

Patron.
