Not implied, not read-in, not “if you squint” — named, addressed, and honored, in the Hebrew prophets and in the founding narrative of the church. The clobber-verse tradition survives by never mentioning them. This entry mentions them.

Who the eunuchs were

Eunuchs in the ancient Near East were people whose bodies did not conform to procreative gender expectations — most castrated, some congenitally so, many serving in roles that placed them outside the male/female social binary of their cultures. Deuteronomy 23:1 had barred them from the assembly. They were, by the categories of their world, the gender-nonconforming: bodies altered or born outside the norm, excluded from religious community explicitly, by statute.

Isaiah 56 — the exclusion, reversed by name

To the eunuchs who keep my sabbaths… I will give, in my house and within my walls, a monument and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off.

Isaiah 56:4–5

Read what happens here. The prophet does not tolerate the eunuchs, does not make an exception for them, does not admit them on probation. God grants them a name better than — better than the procreative family structure that had defined belonging, an everlasting name, inside the house, within the walls. The very people statute had excluded receive the superlative welcome, and the passage sits in the Bible’s own pages as a precedent: the trajectory of scripture bends toward including the gender-variant, stated in scripture itself.

Acts 8 — the church’s first Gentile convert

The pattern completes in the church’s founding document. Philip is sent to an Ethiopian eunuch — a person triply outside: foreign, gender-variant, and legally barred from full temple participation — who is reading Isaiah in his chariot. The eunuch asks the question every excluded person has asked of the church since: “What is to prevent me from being baptized?” (Acts 8:36). The answer, enacted immediately and without condition, is: nothing. Nothing prevents. The first named Gentile baptism in Christian history is a gender-variant African, and the church that performed it wrote it down as a boast, not an embarrassment.

And Jesus, on the record

Matthew 19:12 records Jesus speaking of eunuchs directly: those born so from their mother’s womb, those made so by others, and those who choose it — three categories, stated without condemnation, including congenital gender variance, from the mouth of Christ. Whatever else that saying means, it means this: Jesus knew gender-variant people existed, named them in public teaching, and cursed them exactly zero times.

What this shelf establishes

The scriptural record contains an explicit arc — exclusion by statute, reversal by prophecy, welcome by baptism, acknowledgment by Christ — for people outside the gender binary of their age. Any theology claiming the Bible has “nothing but condemnation” for gender variance has not lost an argument. It has skipped a shelf. Consider it unskipped.

Sources for checking this work: the texts themselves — Deuteronomy 23:1, Isaiah 56:1–8, Acts 8:26–40, Matthew 19:12; Peterson Toscano’s Transfigurations performance scholarship; Megan K.
