This entry answers it the only way historical claims deserve: with the record. Trans and gender-variant people are documented across continents and millennia — and in culture after culture, not merely present but honored.

The record, continent by continent

North America: Two-Spirit people held recognized, often sacred roles in well over a hundred documented Indigenous nations — the Lakota winkte, the Diné nádleehi, the Zuni lhamana (whose most famous member, We’wha, was received in Washington in 1886 as a cultural ambassador). Colonial administrators documented these roles precisely because they tried to eradicate them; the suppression record is itself the evidence of the honor.

South Asia: Hijra communities appear in texts across two millennia — the Kama Sutra, Mughal court records where they held administrative rank and royal trust — with legal recognition restored in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh in the last two decades: a restoration, the courts themselves noted, not an invention.

The Pacific: Fa’afafine in Samoa, māhū in Hawai’i and Tahiti — integrated, named social genders with recognized cultural roles, documented from first European contact and continuous to the present.

The ancient Mediterranean: the galli of Cybele’s cult across the Roman world; Elagabalus, a Roman emperor whom multiple ancient sources record demanding female address and seeking bodily transformation; and the eunuch classes of Byzantium who ran churches, armies, and chanceries for a thousand years.

Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond: gender-variant ritual specialists documented among the Ndongo, the Lugbara, and dozens of other peoples in the ethnographic record — before colonial statutes criminalized what colonial missionaries could not convert.

The pattern inside the record

Two facts repeat across these cases. First: gender variance is not merely tolerated but frequently sacralized — the roles cluster around mediation, healing, ceremony, and trust, the community’s bridge positions. Second: where the honor ended, it ended by imposition — colonial law, missionary campaign, imperial decree — not by internal discovery that the tradition was wrong. The claim “this is new” is, historically, the residue of a suppression succeeding: erase the record, then cite the silence.

What this means for a theology

For a faith that confesses God as creator of all peoples, the record is not an embarrassment to route around — it is data about creation. The image of God, distributed across humanity (see Entry 01), has included gender-expansive people in every age we can see, and communities across the earth read them as gifted, not broken. The scriptural arc of Isaiah 56 and Acts 8 (Entry 02) is not an anomaly. It is one tradition’s version of a recognition the whole species keeps making.

You are not a novelty requiring a defense. You are a continuity requiring a bibliography. Here is its beginning.

Sources for checking this work: Will Roscoe, The Zuni Man-Woman (1991) and Changing Ones (1998); Sabine Lang, Men as Women, Women as Men (1998); Serena Nanda, Neither Man nor Woman: The Hijras of India (1990); Kathryn Ringrose, The Perfect Servant: Eunuchs in Byzantium (2003); Cassius Dio, Roman History 80; Leslie Feinberg, Transgender Warriors (1996); Supreme Court of India, NALSA v.
