Beloved, grace and peace to you this morning — however you arrive here: tired or hopeful, certain or doubting, welcomed elsewhere or shut out elsewhere. Bloom is not a room you have to earn your way into. Sit with us a moment, offered today in the spirit of a low Mass — Word, prayer, and offering, without pretense to more than that.

Introit

(Ps. 36:30-31, 1)

The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment; the law of his God is in his heart. Fret not thyself because of evildoers, the psalm adds, nor envy those who work iniquity — a word about where to fix your eyes before the Gospel even begins.

Collect

O God, who on this day didst raise blessed Henry, Thy confessor, from the height of earthly empire to Thy eternal kingdom — we humbly ask that, just as Thou didst give him grace enough to overcome the enticements of this life, Thou wouldst enable us, following his example, to turn aside from the world’s allurements and come to Thee with an undivided heart.

Epistle

Ecclesiasticus 31:8-11, Douay-Rheims)

Blessed is the man that is found without blemish, and that hath not gone after gold, nor put his trust in money nor in treasures. He that could have transgressed, and hath not transgressed: and could do evil things, and hath not done them: therefore are his goods established in the Lord, and all the church of the saints shall declare his alms.

Gradual

(Ps. 36:30-31; Ps. 111:1)

The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment; the law of his God is in his heart. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord — he shall delight exceedingly in His commandments.

Gospel

Luke 12:35-40, Douay-Rheims)

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: “Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands. And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding, that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord, when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But know this ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Be you then also ready, for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.”

The Offering (Homily)

Ecclesiasticus asks a very specific question: not whether a man was good in general, but whether he was good under a specific kind of pressure — the pressure of having the power to get away with something and not using it. “He that could have transgressed, and hath not transgressed.” That’s the whole test. Not “did he sin,” but “did he have the room to sin, unwatched, unaccountable, and choose not to anyway.”

Luke asks something that sounds different but is really the same question turned toward time instead of power: are you the kind of servant who keeps the lamp burning even when you don’t know if or when anyone will come to see it lit? Not performing readiness for an audience. Actually being ready, in the dark, on the chance it matters.

Put those two questions together and you get something worth sitting with: the truest test of anyone entrusted with power over someone more vulnerable than them isn’t what they do when they’re being watched. It’s what they do with the exact room to do harm that nobody would ever catch.

There is a story sometimes told of a woman who was assaulted by someone well-liked and well-connected in her town, and when she finally found the courage to tell her pastor what had happened, that pastor had every reason available to look away. The accused’s family had funded the building fund for a decade. Sat on the council. Everyone knew there’d be no professional cost to quietly doubting her instead of him, and a real one to believing her. He was tested exactly the way Ecclesiasticus describes — not by whether he said the right thing from the pulpit on Sunday, but by whether, given a private, costly choice between convenience and truth, he chose truth when nothing would have exposed him for choosing otherwise. He believed her. Publicly, at real cost to himself. Nobody handed him a reward for it that week, or that year. He just kept the lamp burning the way Luke describes, without knowing whether it would ever be seen or thanked. Years later, when everything eventually came out anyway, it turned out he was the only one in that whole church who’d actually been ready when the moment of testing came — because he’d been quietly keeping watch the entire time, expecting nothing back for it.

That is the actual measure Bloom holds itself to, and asks every institution claiming God’s name to be held to as well: not what you say when someone’s checking. What you do with the power to look away, when looking away would cost you nothing and no one would ever know.

Henry had an empire and chose to spend it building up the vulnerable instead of himself. The pastor in that story had a reputation and chose to spend it on a woman nobody was going to reward him for believing. Neither of them is remembered for what they said. They’re remembered for what they did with the room they had to do otherwise.

So beloved — whoever you are, wherever you’ve come from, whatever you believe or don’t: the test was never about your confidence, your credentials, or your public performance of faith. It’s what you do with the exact power you have, in the exact moment nobody’s checking. Keep the lamp burning. Especially then.

Secret

Receive, O Lord, this small offering made in memory of a confessor who held great power lightly and used it for others, and grant that we, too, may be found faithful in whatever room we are given to do otherwise.

The Holding

(Benediction — two readings, one truth)

For those who hold this in faith: Lord, You do not test us by what we say when we’re being watched. Give us Henry’s restraint with power, and the servant’s patience in the dark — the readiness that keeps a lamp burning without knowing when, or if, anyone will ever see it lit. Let us be found faithful in the exact room we’re given to do otherwise. Amen.

For those still finding their footing: Whatever power you hold over someone smaller or more vulnerable than you — a title, a trust, a private moment nobody’s checking — what you do with that room, unwatched, is the only test that was ever real. Keep your lamp burning anyway. It matters even in the dark, even if no one ever tells you so.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Ecclesiasticus mean by 'he that could have transgressed, and hath not transgressed'?

It’s naming a very specific kind of integrity — not simply avoiding wrongdoing, but having real, unaccountable opportunity to do wrong and choosing not to anyway.
