Beloved, grace and peace to you this morning — however you arrive here: tired or hopeful, certain or doubting, welcomed elsewhere or shut out elsewhere. Bloom is not a room you have to earn your way into. Sit with us a moment, offered today in the spirit of a low Mass — Word, prayer, and offering, without pretense to more than that.

Introit

(Ps. 102:20, 1)

Bless the Lord, all ye his angels: you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word, hearkening to the voice of his orders. Bless the Lord, O my soul, the verse answers: and let all that is within me bless his holy name.

Collect

O God, who gave blessed Raphael the archangel to thy servant Tobias as a companion on the journey: grant to us, thy servants, that we may always be protected by his guardianship and strengthened by his help. (Confirmed, directly sourced — Missale Romanum 1962, proper to St. Raphael, not adapted)

Epistle

Tobias 12:7-15, Douay-Rheims

In those days, the angel Raphael said to Tobias: It is good to hide the secret of a king, but honorable to reveal and confess the works of God. Prayer is good with fasting and alms, more than to lay up treasures of gold: for alms delivereth from death, and the same is that which purgeth away sins, and maketh to find mercy and life everlasting. I discover then the truth unto you, and I will not hide the secret from you. When thou didst pray with tears, and didst bury the dead, and didst leave thy dinner, and hide the dead by day in thy house, and bury them by night, I offered thy prayer to the Lord. And because thou wert acceptable to God, it was necessary that temptation should prove thee. And now the Lord hath sent me to heal thee, and to deliver Sara thy son’s wife from the devil. For I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the Lord.

Gradual

(Tobit 8:3; Ps. 146:5)

The angel of the Lord, Raphael, took and bound the enemy. Great is our Lord, the verse answers, and great is his power.

Gospel

John 5:1-4, Douay-Rheims

At that time, there was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered, waiting for the moving of the water. And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond, and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.

The Offering

Notice what Raphael does not do in the story he comes from. He doesn’t wave the danger away before it happens. He doesn’t tell Tobias the road is safe, or that Sara’s house isn’t haunted by a grief that has already killed seven men before him. He walks the actual road, in the actual disguise of an ordinary companion, and he stays through every part of the actual danger — right up until the thing that needed healing is healed.

That’s worth saying plainly, because a lot of the language used around protection promises the wrong thing. It promises that if you’re faithful enough, careful enough, good enough, the bad thing simply won’t happen to you. Tobias’s story never makes that promise. Sara had already survived seven wedding nights that ended in a body carried out the door before Raphael ever arrived. The danger was real, and it had already done real damage, long before any companion showed up to walk beside it.

A companion on the journey is not the same thing as a shield that keeps every attack from landing. I’ve sat with survivors of sexual assault who were told, gently or not so gently, that if they’d prayed harder, watched their surroundings more carefully, or simply been a different kind of woman or man, the assault wouldn’t have touched them. That is not what this Gospel offers. The pool at Bethesda is full of people who did nothing wrong and got sick, lame, and withered anyway — and the angel who moves the water doesn’t ask what any of them did to deserve five porches full of suffering before he acts. He just moves the water, for whoever gets there.

What Raphael actually gives Tobias isn’t a guarantee against harm. It’s presence through it — someone who doesn’t leave partway down the road when the danger shows up, who doesn’t disappear once the hard part starts. Yesterday’s offering sat with St. Anthony Mary Claret’s decades of quiet, undramatic showing-up — today’s feast is almost the same lesson from the other side: what it costs, and what it’s worth, to be the one who stays.

If you are carrying something that happened to your body without your consent, hear this plainly: the failure to prevent it was never a referendum on your worth, your carefulness, or your faith. And if anyone has stayed with you through the aftermath — a friend, a therapist, a found family member, this small congregation itself — that staying is not a small thing. It is the exact shape of what Raphael did for two frightened people on a road neither of them chose alone.

Secret

Receive, O Lord, this offering we bring in honor of blessed Raphael the archangel: grant that what we celebrate today in time, we may hold in spirit always. (Adapted from the Missale Romanum 1962, Secret proper to St. Raphael)

The Holding

Go in peace, beloved — however far along your road you are today, however frightening the last stretch of it may have been. If you believe in a God who sends companions for exactly this kind of journey, may you feel that companionship today, however it comes to you. And if you hold no such belief, may you still find — in a friend, in this small community, in your own hard-won survival — someone who simply stays. May you be blessed and kept, this day and always.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was St. Raphael the Archangel?

Raphael is one of only three archangels named in scripture, known chiefly through the Book of Tobias, where he travels in disguise as a human companion to guide and protect Tobias, and heals both Tobias’s father’s blindness and Sara’s affliction.
