Beloved, grace and peace to you this morning — however you arrive here: tired or hopeful, certain or doubting, welcomed elsewhere or shut out elsewhere. Bloom is not a room you have to earn your way into. Sit with us a moment, offered today in the spirit of a low Mass — Word, prayer, and offering, without pretense to more than that.

A Word on Today’s Propers. For the fourth and final consecutive day, today’s Epistle and Gospel continue the Mass of the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost — the same genuine ferial continuation already noted earlier this week, most recently in Thursday’s offering. He, having heard that Jesus was come from Judaea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not. The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before my son die. Jesus saith to him: Go thy way, thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus had said to him, and went his way. And as he was going down, his servants met him, and they brought word, saying that his son lived. He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him. The father therefore knew that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.

The Offering

Notice exactly what the Collect asks for, and what it doesn’t. It doesn’t ask God to remove every adversity before granting peace — it asks for pardon and peace and a quiet mind, in the same breath as “cleansed from all their sins,” as though the two were meant to arrive together, adversity or no adversity. The quiet mind isn’t the reward for the danger being over. It’s asked for in the middle of it.

I think about the people I’ve met who came to this country carrying exactly that kind of unresolved middle — papers still pending, a case still open, a family still separated across a border, a status that could change with one letter in the mail. There’s no honest version of “the adversity is over” available to someone in that position, and it would be a lie to promise one. What the Collect asks for instead is something a person can actually carry while still waiting: a mind that isn’t consumed entirely by the waiting.

The ruler in today’s Gospel understood something like this. He didn’t get to wait for the danger to be resolved before he believed — the son’s fever hadn’t broken yet when the father turned around and went home in peace. He carried the belief through the unresolved middle, a full day’s journey before the outcome was confirmed. That’s the same posture the Collect is asking God to make possible: not the absence of the hard thing, but a mind steady enough to keep walking through it.

If you are waiting — on papers, on a hearing, on a reunion, on any outcome you can’t control and can’t rush — today’s prayer isn’t asking you to pretend the waiting doesn’t cost you anything. It’s asking for something more modest and more real: a quiet mind in the middle of an unquiet situation. That’s not nothing. That may be everything available to ask for today.

Secret

May these mysteries, we beseech thee, O Lord, provide us with a heavenly remedy: and purge our hearts of their faults. (Confirmed, directly sourced — Missale Romanum 1962, Secret, Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost)

The Holding

Go in peace, beloved — carrying whatever unresolved waiting is yours today, and whatever quiet you can manage to hold onto in the middle of it. If you believe in a God who grants peace before the danger has fully passed, may that belief steady you today. And if you hold no such belief, may you still find some small quiet to carry through an unquiet day. May you be blessed and kept, this day and always.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do this week's readings repeat for a fourth day?

The 1962 calendar continues a Sunday’s Mass through its following ferial days until a higher feast intervenes.
