That one word is where this whole morning starts, and everything after it follows from it. Beloved, grace and peace to you, however you arrive at this hour: rested or wrung out, praying easily or not praying at all, certain of God or certain of nothing.

Bloom keeps no threshold you have to clear before you are welcome. Sit with us a while, in the spirit of a low Mass—Word, prayer, and offering, and nothing pretending to be more.

Today the Church keeps the feast of St. Jane Frances de Chantal, a widow, third class, white vestments, with no commemoration. Her Mass is the Mass of holy women, and it opens with a line about being humbled and closes on a Gospel about a treasure hidden in a field.

A treasure hidden in a field. Not a treasure on a table. Not a treasure in a window with a price on it. A treasure hidden in a field, which means that for however long it lay there, every single person who crossed that ground walked directly over it and felt nothing under their feet.

That is the sentence I want us to hold all morning. The worth was already there. The worth was already total. And nobody could see it, and the asking price of the field did not include it.

Introit

Psalm 118:75, 120, 1

I know, O Lord, that Thy judgments are equity: and in Thy truth Thou hast humbled me. Pierce Thou my flesh with Thy fear: for I am afraid of Thy judgments.

Ps. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Collect

Almighty and merciful God, Who didst endow blessed Jane Frances, burning with love of Thee, with a wondrous strength of spirit through all the paths of life in the way of perfection, and didst will through her to ennoble Thy Church by a new religious family: grant, by her merits and prayers, that we who are aware of our own weakness may trust firmly in Thy power and, by the assistance of divine grace, overcome all the obstacles in our way. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Epistle

Proverbs 31:10-31

Who shall find a valiant woman? far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her. The heart of her husband trusteth in her, and he shall have no need of spoils. She will render him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She hath sought wool and flax, and hath wrought by the counsel of her hands.

She is like the merchant’s ship, she bringeth her bread from afar. And she hath risen in the night, and given a prey to her household, and victuals to her maidens. She hath considered a field, and bought it: with the fruit of her hands she hath planted a vineyard. She hath girded her loins with strength, and hath strengthened her arm. She hath tasted and seen that her traffic is good: her lamp shall not be put out in the night.

She hath put out her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle. She hath opened her hand to the needy, and stretched out her hands to the poor. She shall not fear for her house in the cold of snow: for all her domestics are clothed with double garments. She hath made for herself clothing of tapestry: fine linen, and purple is her covering. Her husband is honourable in the gates, when he sitteth among the senators of the land.

She made fine linen, and sold it, and delivered a girdle to the Chanaanite. Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day. She hath opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of clemency is on her tongue. She hath looked well to the paths of her house, and hath not eaten her bread idle. Her children rose up, and called her blessed: her husband, and he praised her.

Many daughters have gathered together riches: thou hast surpassed them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: the woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands: and let her works praise her in the gates.

Gradual

Psalm 44:3, 5

Grace is poured abroad in thy lips; therefore hath God blessed thee for ever.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, proceed prosperously, and reign. Because of truth and meekness and justice: and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Alleluia.

Gospel

Matthew 13:44-52

The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls. Who when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Again the kingdom of heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together of all kind of fishes. Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but the bad they cast forth. So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just. And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Have ye understood all these things? They say to him: Yes. He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven, is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old.

The Offering

A treasure hidden in a field. Christ hands us three pictures this morning, and the first one governs the other two.

A man is walking across ground that is not his. He finds something in the dirt, covers it back over, goes and sells everything he owns, and buys the field. And the seller, who had held that land for years, sells it at the price of a field. Nobody in that exchange was cheated and nobody lied. There was only a treasure hidden in a field, and one of the two men had put his hand into the dirt.

That is the whole scandal of a treasure hidden in a field. The value was never in question. Only the visibility was. A treasure hidden in a field is not a smaller treasure for lying under six inches of soil.

Now set the Epistle beside it, because the Church did not pair these two readings by accident. Proverbs 31 is a treasure hidden in a field written out as a household inventory.

Who shall find a valiant woman? far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her. Then twenty verses of specifics. Wool and flax, a ship, a field, a vineyard, a spindle, linen and purple, a girdle sold to a merchant. It reads like an inventory.

And this passage has been used as exactly that. Read from a pulpit as a checklist, Proverbs 31 turns into a measuring stick laid against actual living women, who then discover they come up short. It is one of the more efficient ways ever devised to make a person feel like a failure while quoting Scripture at her approvingly. And it is a misreading, because the passage is describing a treasure hidden in a field rather than grading one.

So watch what the text does with its own inventory. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain. That is three lines from the end, and it takes the two measures a woman was most reliably judged by and calls them both broken instruments.

The passage counts for twenty verses and then tells you the count was never the point. Her worth was a treasure hidden in a field the entire time. That is what a treasure hidden in a field does to a ledger: it makes the ledger the less interesting document.

Treasure hidden in a field: she rises in the night, and no one is awake to confirm it.

And look at when she works. She hath risen in the night. Her lamp shall not be put out in the night. Twice, the text deliberately puts her labor in the dark, where there is nobody awake to see it and no witness to confirm that it happened at all.

Then, in the middle of that: Her husband is honourable in the gates, when he sitteth among the senators of the land. He is the visible one. He sits where the whole city can watch him sitting, and the Epistle says plainly what he is sitting on.

We prayed about a lamp that stays lit earlier this month, and about a lamp kept burning where nobody was watching back in July. Today the image goes one step further. Her lamp burns at night precisely because a treasure hidden in a field does not require an audience in order to be real.

Now the teaching this dismantles, because I did not come here to admire a metaphor.

There is a teaching, almost never said out loud in these words, that worth has to be visible to count. That a life is worth what it can be seen producing. That if you cannot point to the output, hold it up, and have it recognized by somebody in the gates, then whatever you did was not really work and whatever you are is not really valuable.

That teaching has specific casualties, and I will name them. People who are chronically ill. People who are disabled, whose capacity is not a fixed number but a thing that moves week to week, whose good hours cannot be scheduled in advance and cannot be promised to anyone.

Because the modern version of Proverbs 31 as a checklist is the productivity ledger, and the ledger has no column for a day spent horizontal. A person whose body will not produce on demand learns very fast that the ledger reads them as empty ground. Nothing visible in the field, so nothing in the field. A treasure hidden in a field reads as bare dirt to any instrument that only measures the surface.

That is a lie, and today’s Gospel is the flat contradiction of it. The field with the treasure in it and the field with nothing in it look exactly the same from the road. A treasure hidden in a field is invisible by definition, and its being invisible has never once altered what it is worth.

Let me be precise about what I am and am not claiming, because Wednesday’s prayer for households assembled rather than inherited made a different argument this week. That day was about who counts as family. Today is narrower and harder: whether a life has to be legible to anyone in order to be valuable. A treasure hidden in a field answers no.

Sunday we sat with a law that kills when it is used to condemn, and this is the same wound from another angle. Proverbs 31 read as letter is a sentence handed down. Proverbs 31 read as spirit is a description of a treasure hidden in a field, and it ends by telling you the visible measures were deceptive all along.

Now, the woman we honor this morning, because her life is the argument in practice.

Jane Frances Frémyot was born at Dijon in January of 1572, daughter of the president of the Parliament of Burgundy. She married the Baron de Chantal in 1592. He was killed in a shooting accident in 1601, and she was a widow at twenty-eight with four children.

What followed was seven years in her father-in-law’s household, where the record of her life says she bore patiently and gently with the servitude imposed on her there by an arrogant and wicked servant. Seven years. Not a mission, not a founding, not anything anybody would have written down. Seven years of a treasure hidden in a field.

During Lent of 1604 she went to Dijon to visit her father, and St. Francis de Sales was preaching at the Sainte Chapelle. Six years after that, on Trinity Sunday, the sixth of June, 1610, the Congregation of the Visitation was canonically established at Annecy.

And here is the part that makes today’s readings land, because the order’s own founding purpose is stated without embarrassment. Its aim was to receive, with a view to their spiritual advancement, young girls and even widows who had not the desire or strength to subject themselves to the austere ascetical practices in force in all the religious orders at that time.

Read that again slowly. She founded a religious order for the women that every existing order could not use.

Not the strong ones. Not the ones who could keep the fasts and the night offices and the discipline. The ones whose bodies or whose ages or whose circumstances had already disqualified them everywhere else—she built a house whose entire premise was that those women were a treasure hidden in a field.

There were eighty-six of those houses by the time she died at Moulins in December of 1641. Which means her judgment was correct at scale. The women the austere orders read as empty ground turned out to be carrying something, and somebody had to buy the field before anyone could see it. Eighty-six houses is what a treasure hidden in a field looks like once someone finally digs.

Treasure hidden in a field: five years in that chair, and nothing on the record.

There is a story sometimes told of a woman who spent five years in a chair beside her mother’s bed in a converted spare room. Not five years of crisis. Five years of ordinary weekday afternoons, medications sorted into a plastic organizer, the same paperback left face down on the side table for months at a time.

When it was over, somebody at the funeral asked her what she had been doing with herself lately. She said, and she meant it, that she had not really been doing anything.

Five years. No title, no wage, no entry anywhere that a ledger would recognize, and she genuinely believed her own answer. A treasure hidden in a field, and the person standing in the field could not see it either.

That is the cruelest part of the teaching I am arguing against. It does not just make other people undervalue you. It gets inside and makes you undervalue yourself, until you can describe five years of the hardest work of your life as not really doing anything. That is a treasure hidden in a field seen from the inside.

So hear the Gospel say it plainly to her, and to you. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Hidden is not the same as absent. Unwitnessed is not the same as unreal.

Christ’s second picture tightens it. A merchant seeking good pearls—seeking, which means he had to look at a great many that were not it—finds one pearl of great price and sells everything he has for it. Nobody in that market saw what he saw. One pearl among many trays of pearls is a treasure hidden in a field with a different shape.

And the third picture is the one I most need us to hear, because it is where people get hurt. A net cast into the sea gathers together all kind of fishes, and everything comes up at once, and the sorting happens afterward, on the shore, at the end of the world, by angels.

Not by us. Not now. Christ specifies the sorters and He specifies the timing, and neither one is you standing in a field this morning deciding whose life has anything in it. Every one of those fish may be a treasure hidden in a field.

Every teaching and every institution is judged by what it grows, and a theology that sorts people by visible output early has a documented harvest. It is the same instrument that treats bodies as the whole argument about the people living in them, and it fails for the same reason. It reads the surface of the field and calls that a valuation. A treasure hidden in a field is precisely the thing that method cannot find.

Then Christ closes with the householder who brings forth out of his treasure new things and old. Both. Nothing in the storeroom gets discarded for being old, and nothing gets discarded for being new.

The five-year stretch in the chair and the eighty-six houses come out of the same storeroom. So does yesterday’s promise about rain that arrives slowly enough to soak in, which is what a treasure hidden in a field looks like when it is finally growing something.

For anyone here who holds none of the theology, the claim underneath translates with nothing lost. Visibility is a terrible proxy for value, and most of what actually holds a life or a household together is unrecorded by design. Anyone measuring their own worth by what other people can see them producing is using a broken instrument, and the honest response is to stop trusting the reading. Call it a treasure hidden in a field or call it unpaid work; the arithmetic comes out the same.

The Collect we prayed asks God for something oddly specific for a woman who founded eighty-six houses. It asks that we who are aware of our own weakness may trust firmly in God’s power. Aware of our own weakness—the prayer takes it as given that we know exactly where we fall short.

It does not ask for the weakness to be removed. It asks for the trust anyway. That is the posture of a person who suspects there is a treasure hidden in a field she cannot see the bottom of.

So here is the day, and it is smaller and steadier than the readings’ grandeur suggests. Whatever you did this week that nobody recorded still happened. Whatever you are carrying that nobody can see is still there, at full weight, at full worth. It is a treasure hidden in a field, and the field is you.

A treasure hidden in a field is worth what it is worth on the morning nobody knows about it, and on the morning the whole city finds out, and the amount does not change between those two mornings. Walk out into your own ground today believing that. And leave the sorting to the shore.

Secret

O Lord, may this sacrificial gift enkindle in us that fire of love which burned so warmly in the heart of blessed Jane Frances and consumed it by the flames of everlasting charity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

The Holding

(Benediction—two readings, one truth)

For those who hold this in faith:

Lord, You have never once needed a witness in order to see us. Bless the work done in this house at four in the morning, the work nobody wrote down, the work the one who did it cannot even name as work.

Where we have been taught to read ourselves as empty ground, teach us to read again. Let us trust that there is a treasure hidden in a field under every life You made, including the ones the world walks across without stopping. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those still finding their footing:

If today you cannot point to anything you have produced, you have not thereby produced nothing. The record was always going to be incomplete, and the record was never the thing.

Five years in a chair is not an absence. A week spent horizontal is not an empty week.
