Today is the Feria VI after the fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost, fourth class, and the vestments are green. Ss. Protus and Hyacinth, Martyrs, are commemorated after the Collect, and their own Secret asks God for the remedy of eternal salvation. That is the phrase we are staying with.

Hold what kind of morning this is. The Church has handed us a Sunday we have already said three times over, and the whole of what is new in it is two prayers for two men about whom very little is known. One of those prayers names what it wants, and what it wants is the remedy of eternal salvation.

Two men, one entry in the calendar, and a persecution in the middle of the third century. The Church does not tell us what either of them said or did under it, and she does not build the morning on it. She names them, keeps them inside somebody else’s Mass, and asks for the remedy of eternal salvation.

Wherever you are, you are welcome here. If you came in this morning carrying something that has not improved and is not going to by Friday teatime, the prayer appointed for today asks for the remedy of eternal salvation on your behalf without inspecting you first.

A Word on Today’s Propers

Today is the fourth morning this archive has stood in the Mass of the fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost. It was given whole on Sunday, said again on Monday, said again on Wednesday, and it returns now unchanged. A fourth full copy of the same Introit, Lesson, Gradual and Gospel would be length pretending to be reverence, and this ministry will not do it.

So the printing follows the count. The Introit, the Lesson, the Gradual and the Gospel stand as citations, each carrying its own onward reference. The Collect and the Secret are printed, because a Daily Offering with no prayer in it is not a liturgy, and both are printed in the wording this archive has already used for them.

What is genuinely new is the commemoration. Protus and Hyacinth bring three orations that have never stood here, and two of them have a place in this form. The second is the reason for the morning, and it asks for the remedy of eternal salvation.

Introit

Ps 85:1-3, 85:4.

The entrance chant of this Sunday’s Mass, printed in full when the Mass was given whole and again on the Monday after it. It is not reprinted at a fourth asking.

Collect

May Thy abiding mercy, O Lord, cleanse and strengthen Thy Church: and, since without Thee she cannot exist in safety, let her be ever guided by Thy grace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

This is the prayer Monday stopped on, and it is printed here in the same English, because the same prayer in two different Englishes reads as two different prayers.

The Commemoration of Ss. Protus and Hyacinth, Martyrs

May the precious witness of Thy blessed Martyrs, Protus and Hyacinth, comfort us, O Lord, and may their kind intercession continually protect us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

The Catholic Encyclopedia records them as martyrs during the persecution of Valerian, which it dates 257 to 259, and states that their annual commemoration is mentioned under the eleventh of September in the Depositio Martyrum of the chronography for 354. They were buried in the Coemeterium of Basilla on the Via Salaria, later called the Catacomb of St. Hermes.

The article records one more thing, and it is the reason today has any detail at all. In 1845 Father Marchi came upon the still undisturbed grave of Hyacinth in a crypt of that catacomb: a small square niche holding ashes and pieces of burned bone, wrapped in the remains of costly stuffs. The slab over it carried three lines, a date in September, a name and the word martyr.

That is nearly the whole of it. Pope Damasus wrote an epitaph for the two of them and part of it still exists. Beyond a persecution, a burial place, a niche and a slab, the Church has two names and three prayers, and one of those prayers asks for the remedy of eternal salvation.

Epistle

Galatians 5:25-26; 6:1-10.

Paul’s close to the practical half of the letter, given whole on Sunday and not reprinted here.

Gradual

Ps 91:2-3, 94:3.

The response and its verse belong to the same Sunday, printed whole when the Mass was given and again on the Monday. No Alleluia follows a Gradual on a feria of this season, and its absence is the shape of the day rather than an omission.

Gospel

Luke 7:11-16.

The gate at Naim, read in full on Sunday and not reprinted here.

The Offering

What the second prayer asks for

Start with the sentence itself, because everything this morning comes out of one noun in it.

Grant that they may procure for us the remedy of eternal salvation.

That is the close of the Secret said over the gifts today, and it is the only place in the whole Mass where anybody says plainly what is being asked for. The Collect of the day asks that the Church be cleansed and strengthened. The martyrs’ Collect asks for comfort. Then the Secret arrives and names the thing: the remedy of eternal salvation.

Sit with the choice of word, because the Church had a shelf of others. She could have asked for a crown. She could have asked for a reward, or a wage, or a portion. What she asks for is the remedy of eternal salvation, and a remedy is a completely different kind of object from a crown.

A crown is given to somebody on account of what they did. A remedy is given to somebody on account of what is wrong. The first looks backward at a life and delivers a finding on it; the second looks at a condition and answers it. The remedy of eternal salvation is the second sort of thing, and the Church chose that word on a day when the other one was right there.

Set the two commemoration prayers side by side and the pattern holds. The first asks for comfort. The second asks for the remedy of eternal salvation. Neither asks that we be made like them, and neither asks that their deaths be turned into a lesson for the room. Two mild askings, on a day with two martyrdoms standing behind it.

Look also at how little the sentence does to qualify it. There is no clause about who among us is fit for the remedy of eternal salvation, no list of who is included, no threshold and no examination at the door. The prayer says for us, and us is whoever is in the building.

The remedy of eternal salvation

Now the noun on its own, and it will take a slow look.

A remedy is not a compliment. No one has ever been handed one as a mark of esteem. A remedy is what you give a person because something in front of you needs answering, and the whole logic of the remedy of eternal salvation runs along that line rather than along the line of merit.

Think how a remedy is actually issued. It is issued against the ailment. The question in the room is what is wrong, not who is asking, and a dispenser who began by assessing the applicant’s record would be doing something other than dispensing. The remedy of eternal salvation is asked for on exactly those terms.

This is a different claim from the one made yesterday morning, and the difference is worth stating flatly. Yesterday’s Collect was about the ground of a request, and said the plea does not rest on our own standing. Today’s Secret is about the kind of thing requested. One is about what the asking leans on; the remedy of eternal salvation is about what is in the packet.

And the Church asks for it on a Friday with nothing whatever happening. Fourth class. Green. A Mass at its fourth printing. If the remedy of eternal salvation were the sort of thing a congregation works up to, this is not the morning anybody would choose to ask for it.

Take the ordinary force of that. There is no crisis in the room and no anniversary on the calendar, and the Church asks for medicine anyway, on the flattest available day, for whoever turns up. The remedy of eternal salvation is put out in advance, the way a dispensary sets out what it has before it knows who is coming.

Consider too who the word is aimed at. A crown implies a contest and so a field of competitors; a remedy implies neither. You can hand the remedy of eternal salvation to every person in a room at once without any of them being ranked against the others, and the sentence does exactly that. It says for us, once, and moves on.

A remedy answers a condition

Here is the part that decides how the rest of the morning reads.

If salvation is a reward, then the interesting question is always the person: what they have done, what they are like, whether they are the sort. If salvation is a remedy, the interesting question is the trouble, and the person is simply the one it is happening to. The remedy of eternal salvation moves the whole conversation off the applicant and onto the ailment.

That move is not a small pastoral kindness. It changes who is entitled to be in the queue. A reward has a shortlist by definition, and somebody has to draw it up. The remedy of eternal salvation has no shortlist in it anywhere, because a remedy is defined by what it treats rather than by who qualifies.

Two martyrs are standing behind this prayer, and even they are not made the reason. The Secret does not say we should be given the remedy of eternal salvation on the strength of what Protus and Hyacinth managed. It asks that the offerings procure it, in memory of them, which is a different arrangement altogether.

Look at the verb, because it is doing more than it seems. Procure. The offerings are asked to procure the remedy of eternal salvation, and what is on the table this morning is bread and wine on an ordinary Friday. Not a martyrdom, not a heroic life, not anything either of these two men went through. The plainest objects in the building are asked to fetch the most serious thing in the prayer.

Hold onto that if your own week has produced nothing you would call an offering. The Church is not asking that anything impressive be brought forward first. She puts out what she always puts out, on a day the calendar ranks lowest, and asks that it procure the remedy of eternal salvation for everybody standing there.

Set that beside the other pair of martyrs this archive has kept together, Hippolytus and Cassian in August. Two names, one entry in the calendar, one set of prayers between them. Here as there, the Church does not sort the two men or rank them, and the remedy of eternal salvation is asked for the room rather than awarded to the pair.

I am not making this a question of accounts. The Secret’s opening clause could carry a homily of its own and it is not getting one today, because the weight of the sentence falls at the other end. The Church names the thing she is asking for, and the name she uses is the remedy of eternal salvation.

What this prayer never asks for

Now the harm, and the day’s own text is what asks me to say it.

Read the whole Mass through for what it requests, and one thing is conspicuously missing. Nowhere does it ask that any body present be made well. Not the Collect, not the martyrs’ Collect, not the Secret. The only medicine named anywhere is the remedy of eternal salvation, and it is asked for people whose bodies are left exactly as they are.

So the group named this morning is disabled people and chronically ill people, and the harmful teaching evaluated is healing-as-verdict. That a body which does not improve is a body whose faith did not take. That being prayed over and staying ill is a report on the person. That an unchanged condition is an unfinished piece of business between a person and God.

Put the fruit test to it, the way this ministry tests everything: by their fruits you shall know them. Ask what healing-as-verdict grows inside Christian rooms, because that is the record this ministry is entitled to examine.

It grows a prayer line where the same person comes forward month after month and the disappointment in the room becomes audible. It grows the question have you asked what God is teaching you through this, offered as care and landing as an accusation. It grows people who stop mentioning a condition at all, because mentioning it has turned into a progress report. And it grows a platform where every account given from the front is an account of recovery, and the other kind is never heard.

Two things this is emphatically not saying. It is not saying a body is a fault, or that anybody here is a condition rather than a person. And it is not saying that praying for your own body is a lesser thing; people ask for their bodies constantly, that asking is ordinary and good, and the remedy of eternal salvation does not rank itself above it.

The calendar is restrained about all of this in a way that helps. Two martyrs, and the Church gives them no Mass of their own, no red vestment and no rank above the lowest she has. She adds two sentences to somebody else’s Friday. A tradition inclined to make an example of suffering would have done a great deal more with these two than ask for the remedy of eternal salvation.

This group has been named here four times in the last three weeks and the axis each time was different. Worth, then status, then capacity, then who the word burden gets assigned to. Today is none of those. Today is about what the Church actually asks for on behalf of the sick, and what she does not.

One more door to close, because the argument opens it. Saying the remedy of eternal salvation comes from outside can be misheard as saying nothing anybody does counts, which would be cruel to the exact people named. It is not the claim, as a week ago Friday put it: what you do matters, and it is not the engine.

What he could not point to

Which brings the argument down to the size it actually lives at.

There is a story sometimes told of a man who does his washing in a launderette on a corner at half past nine on a Sunday morning, before the eleven o’clock.

He has believed since he was small and has never had a stretch of not believing. He would tell you so himself without much interest in it, the way somebody tells you their shoe size. It is the arrangement his life has always been in.

Another customer got talking to him one Sunday over the folding shelf, worked out where he was going afterwards, and asked him, pleasantly enough, whether it did him any good.

He thought about it and said no, not that he could point to. He is not calmer than other men and he has not been spared anything. Nothing in his circumstances has moved in the direction he would have chosen, and he could produce no evidence at all for the eleven o’clock if a room asked him for some.

Then he folded the last sheet, put the bag over his shoulder and went.

That is the turn, and it is smaller than a conversion story. He gave the honest answer, which was that nothing had improved, and the honest answer changed nothing about what he was going to do at eleven. The remedy of eternal salvation is taken in that manner, by people who cannot show you what it has done for them and who go anyway.

I am not going to tell you he is certain underneath all that. He is not, and he would say so before I did. Asked the same question this Sunday he would give the same answer, and the bag would go over the same shoulder.

What he has never once done is treat the absence of improvement as a reason to stop. A man who thought the eleven o’clock was a prize would have worked out years ago that it was not arriving. The remedy of eternal salvation is asked for on the flattest morning available, for people in exactly his position, and the asking does not wait on results to justify it.

Secret

May Thy sacrament, O Lord, always keep us and guard us from the assaults of the devil. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

The commemoration adds its own, and this one has never stood here before.

In memory of Thy holy Martyrs, Protus and Hyacinth, we pay our debt to Thee through these offerings: grant that they may procure for us the remedy of eternal salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Note where the sentence lands. It ends on the thing wanted rather than on the two men remembered, and the thing wanted is the remedy of eternal salvation.

The Holding

May God set out for you today what He has, without first asking how you came to need it, and may the remedy of eternal salvation reach you as medicine rather than as a verdict on the year you have had. Nothing about you has to improve first. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Amen.

And if none of that language belongs to you, take it plainly. Help worth having is issued against the trouble and not against the person, and a thing that has not got better is not a mark against you. Ask for what you need today in those terms, and let the explanation wait.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is today’s Mass the same as Sunday’s again?+

Because today is a fourth-class feria, the lowest rank in the 1962 calendar, and a feria of that kind in this season carries the preceding Sunday’s Mass.
