Your first swap

You can come and say nothing. You can leave any time.

If you have never tried on clothes where other people can see, this page is for you. You do not need to bring anything, explain yourself or talk to anyone. Walk in, look, take what fits who you are, and go.

A walk through the day

What to expect at your first clothing swap. Tick as you read.

Six moments, in order. Tick each one when it makes sense to you; the ticks stay in this browser and nowhere else.

0 of 6 ready

  1. You need nothing. Bring a friend if you want one, or come alone. Sizes on the racks are labelled in ranges rather than single letters, so you do not need to know your exact size.

  2. A greeter hands you a bag and points out the rack map. If the venue has a quiet corner, the greeter can tell you where it is. Nobody asks your name or why you came.

  3. Dressing space varies by venue. Where there is a curtained space and a mirror, use it for as long as you like. Where there is not, take things home to try. Nobody comments on what you pick up or how it fits.

  4. Volunteers wear name tags with their pronouns, so you know how to address them. Nobody asks for yours. If you want to tell someone, you can. You never have to.

  5. None. No one photographs guests at a Bloom Swap, ever. Volunteers agree to it before they work a swap, and the rule is on the safety page with the others.

  6. When you have what you need, walk out. There is no checkout and no form. If it gets to be too much, you can leave at any moment, by any exit, with or without a bag.

For the nervous

If this is the first time you try on clothes in the open.

Most people at a swap are there for the same reason you are. Here is what you may do, and what nobody there will do.

You may

  • Come in whatever you usually wear
  • Browse any rack, in any size and any style
  • Hold something up in the mirror and put it back
  • Take something home to try
  • Ask a volunteer to fetch a size or carry your bag
  • Sit down, step outside, or leave

Nobody will

  • Ask your name, your ID or why you came
  • Ask for your pronouns
  • Comment on your body or your choices
  • Photograph you
  • Count what you take
  • Ask you to sign anything

If this is part of something bigger for you, you are not the only one working it out. Bloom runs a free Trans Identity peer group, and like everything at Bloom it costs nothing.

FAQ

Questions first-timers ask

Still asking? Write to swap@bloomministries.org and a person answers.

What if I do not know my size?

That is common, and it is fine. Racks are labelled in size ranges, and a volunteer can show you where to start if you ask. If there is no changing space, take a few things home to try. How a swap works shows how the racks are laid out.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes. Bring a friend, a partner, a parent or no one. They can browse too; everyone in the room is welcome to take what fits.

Will anyone ask me about my gender?

No. Racks are sorted by size and style, not by gender, and nobody at a swap asks who the clothes are for.

What should I wear?

Whatever you usually wear. Something easy to pull a top over helps if there is no changing space, but nothing is expected of you.

What if I get overwhelmed?

Step outside, sit down, or leave. You do not need to tell anyone. If the venue has a quiet corner, the greeter can point to it when you arrive. If it is more than a hard moment, Bloom’s crisis support is free and a person answers.

Do I have to talk to anyone?

No. A greeter will say hello and hand you a bag. You can nod, take the bag and browse in silence. Nobody will take it personally.

When you are ready

Come when you are ready.

The next swap near you will be on the board two weeks before it happens. Join the list and it will find you.
