It is good advice. It is also advice that assumes you have between three and six thousand dollars sitting unallocated.

Flights, bus or train fare, fuel for the drive, a rental truck, and a night in a motel partway if the trip cannot be done in one push. Pets included — a policy we adopted because the alternative was watching people refuse to leave without them.
Security deposit, first month’s rent, application and screening fees, and utility activation deposits. These are paid directly to the landlord or utility wherever possible, which also removes the problem of proving to a leasing office that the money is real.
Document updates in the new state, name and gender marker filing fees where applicable, new IDs, and vehicle registration. The paperwork of existing somewhere new is its own expense and it is rarely budgeted for.
Prescription bridge supplies so hormone therapy does not lapse in the gap between providers, plus help finding an affirming provider in the destination before you arrive rather than after.
Groceries and essentials for the stretch between arriving and the first paycheck landing. This is the most commonly underestimated cost in any relocation and the one most likely to send someone back.
A relocation transition support group and a real point of contact, because arriving somewhere safe and knowing nobody is its own hard thing that support programs routinely forget to plan for.
That is the whole starting requirement. If you do not know where you are going yet, say that — helping figure out the destination is part of what we do, and several people have landed better than their original plan because of that conversation.
Not an estimate from a template. We price your specific route, your specific deposit, your specific documents, and we tell you what the whole move costs. Many people have never seen that figure written down before, and it is frequently smaller than the one in their head.

That is the complete list. There is no income documentation, no proof of harassment, no letter from a provider, and no requirement that you demonstrate your situation is worse than someone else’s. We are aware that requiring people to prove their own danger is itself a harm, and we do not do it.
Reach out before the situation is at its worst if you possibly can. A relocation planned over three weeks costs less, lands better, and has far more options than one executed in forty-eight hours. If it is already urgent, reach out anyway — we have done fast, and we will do fast again.
This program is funded entirely by donations to the Trans Relocation Fund. When the fund is low, we say so publicly rather than quietly slowing down approvals. What we can do in a given month is a direct function of what people gave that month.

Yes, and pet costs are covered — transport, pet deposits, and carriers. We made this explicit policy because the alternative, in practice, was people declining to relocate at all.
Say so in your first message and mark it urgent. Emergency timelines get moved to the front. Fast moves are more expensive and have fewer options, so we may be able to cover proportionally less — but we would much rather get you out on a tight budget than not at all.
No. This is a grant, not a loan. There is no repayment, no expectation of future donation, and no obligation of any kind. You do not owe us a testimonial, a photo, or your story.
No. Our public ledger records that relocation funds were spent and in what amounts. It never records who. If we ever wanted to share a story, we would ask long afterward, in writing, with a real ability to say no and change your mind later.
