MARRIAGE

Married, withoutan asterisk.

Same-sex Catholic marriage is celebrated here without qualification, in the same rite, with the same preparation and the same register entry as any other. The preparation is serious and it is not waived for anyone. Nothing about it costs money.

You ask

Either of you can write. Include a rough date if you have one, and say if there is any pressure on the timing.

Pre-Cana — six sessions

Six sessions with the Ordinary covering consent, money, conflict, family, sex, and what you each think a marriage is for.

Six sessions — no waiver

Eight weeks minimum

The preparation runs a minimum of eight weeks from the first session. Long engagements are welcome; short ones are not accommodated.

Eight weeks — minimum

Banns published three times

Your intention to marry is published three times so that anyone with a canonical impediment can raise it. Dispensation is available in writing.

The rite, and the register

Celebrated in the Roman Rite of 1962 and entered in the bound marriage register in ink, in the names you both use.

Required — not waivable

On the banns and their dispensation

The banns are dispensable in writing by the Ordinary for grave cause, including danger to either party. Where publication would expose a couple to a violent family, an employer, or a state that tracks them, dispensation is treated here as an ordinary act of pastoral government — not as an exception grudgingly made.

Banns currently published.

No banns are currently published

When a couple is in preparation and has not sought dispensation, their intention appears in this register three times before the wedding. This table lists what is actually published, and today that is nothing.

Open — none published

Dispensations granted

Dispensations from publication are recorded by the Chancery and held on file rather than posted, since publishing them would defeat the purpose of granting them.

Held on file

Civil solemnisation

Oregon’s requirements for who may solemnise a marriage and how the licence is returned are being confirmed in writing before any wedding is scheduled. Couples are told exactly where that stands when they ask.

CONVALIDATION

Already married at the courthouse.

Couples married civilly can have that marriage convalidated — celebrated sacramentally and entered in the register — without pretending the civil marriage was nothing. Many couples here married in a courthouse because it was the only door open at the time. That is not a defect to be repented of.

Convalidation still runs through the full six sessions of Pre-Cana. The eight-week minimum applies. A marriage of twenty years gets the same preparation as one of twenty days, and most long-married couples say the sessions were the point rather than the price.

Yes, without qualification and without a modified rite. Same-sex Catholic marriage is celebrated here in the same books, with the same preparation, and recorded in the same register as every other marriage. Rome holds otherwise, and the Chancery states that rather than obscure it.
No. Six sessions over a minimum of eight weeks is a standing requirement and it is not waived, including for the Ordinary’s own friends. Set your date after the preparation is under way rather than before.
Ask for a dispensation from the banns in your first message. Grave cause includes danger to either party, and here that is treated as an ordinary reason rather than an extraordinary one. The dispensation is put in writing and held on file, not posted.
Oregon’s solemnisation and licence-return requirements are being confirmed in writing, and until that is settled the Chancery tells couples plainly where it stands rather than assuring them. Many couples handle the civil licence separately and ask for the sacrament here.
It is not a bar, and it is worth naming early so the preparation can take it seriously. The sessions are built for the couple in front of them.
Nothing. There is no fee for the preparation, the rite, the register entry, or the certificate.

Begin Pre-Cana

Either of you can start this. Say if you need the banns dispensed and why, in as much or as little detail as you want.
