The Reading
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:5
The Word
Notice what the sentence does not say. It does not say the darkness was mild, or brief, or imagined. It does not scold you for having noticed the dark. Scripture’s opening claim about light is made with the darkness still standing in the room — present tense, both of them: the light shines, the darkness has not overcome. Faith here is not the denial of the dark. It is the report, filed from inside it, that the overcoming has not happened and will not.
You may be reading this from inside a long dark — a diagnosis, a legislature, a family’s silence. The word for this day is not “cheer up.” It is a status report you can lean your whole weight on: has not overcome. Present perfect. Still true at press time. Still true tonight.
A Line to Carry
The darkness gets a room, not a verdict.
The Holding
Go into this day held: your name known, your body honored, your dark neither denied nor deciding. The light that shines is not waiting for you to earn it — it was shining before you woke and will outlast whatever this day does. You are held. That was never a condition to be met. Amen.
